Byron & Hyelim at the EFG London Jazz Festival

We had a packed weekend of events down at the club on the 12th & 13th November, kicking off with a fantastic night featuring Byron Wallen & Hyelim Kim as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival!

Byron & Hyelim’s talents are well-known to our club regulars – Byron has often been featured as a soloist over the last five years and Hyelim regularly performs as a member of Notes Inégales – so it was great to see lots of new faces in the audience taking in the sounds of these fantastic musicians.

The night got underway with an improvised set from Notes Inégales, showcasing the amazing flexibility of the ensemble and getting us ready for what was to come. Next up, Byron take to the stage for a short solo set in which we got a taste of his stunning virtuosity and musicianship as he wove together lyrical melodies and extended techniques.

Hyelim’s solo took us on a journey to some pretty amazing places – the fascinating sound of the taegum distorting and warping under her control and mixing breath sounds and spoken word to create some spine-tingling effects. They rounded off their sets with a duo improvisation, exploring a bold mix of sound worlds and taking in everything from traditional Korean music to jazz.

To close the night, the evening’s soloists came together with Notes Inégales for a couple of Peter Wiegold‘s pieces alongside groove-heavy improvisations that saw plenty of toe-tapping amongst the audience. It’s always such a thrill to welcome artists back to the club and it was pretty spectacular home-coming for Byron & Hyelim.
