The music of the series is all built around the inspiration of the ‘Song of Songs’ the devotional and mystical poetry from the Middle-East that celebrates divine and earthly love.
In the second gig we welcome singer Merit Ariane and qanun-player Nilufar Habibian, who will include Aramaic chant and Sephardic songs. Then in number four we have Jenni Roditi’s TIC, The Improvisers Choir, the free-wheeling, free-spirIted choir who recently won the Nonclassical ‘Battle of the Bands’.
Alice, Merit, Jenni, Rob, Chris, co-director Martin and I are all writing for this. I’ve been discovering the extraordinary poetry of 14thC Persian poet Hafiz:
“What he poured in our cup we drank, whether the mead of heaven or the wine of drunkenness.”
“Seek life and patience, for the great wheel, with its sleight-of-hand, has a thousand tricks more strange than these.”
Please get your early-bird season ticket! Fly with us for some ecstatic singing, exquisite string playing from resident violins Max Baillie and Jackie Shave and ‘cello Robin Michael, underpinned by our rock-solid rhythm section, Joel, Ben Markland, Simon Limbrick and Martin Butler, not to mention Hyelim Kim, Korean taegum flute, and Jon Banks accordion.
I love the way this band can move across these worlds. Join us down in our basement bar, courtesy, as ever, of our wonderful hosts, Hodge Jones and Allen. Bar and food from Taste of India at 7pm, music at 8pm.
